Corlys is the head of house Velaryon, and the husband of Rhaenys Targaryen. The Velaryons are not big players in GoT, but in House of the Dragon, it's clear that Corlys, also known as the Sea Snake, is not someone to be messed with. The Velaryons are also a family with dragon-riders and appropriate partners for the Targaryens. Daeron would eventually pass away during the Great Spring Sickness after 25 years on the throne.

The beginning of House of the Dragon takes place 172 years before Princess Daenerys Targaryen's birth. As the younger brother of King Viserys, Daemon was the presumed heir to the throne until Viserys revoked his heirhood and named Rhaenyra his successor. When Aemma dies after Viserys orders that she undergo a C-section against her will, the line of succession is thrown into chaos. With no son to pass the crown to, Viserys removes his younger brother, Daemon, as his heir and instead names Rhaenyra as his successor. He married his cousin, Queen Aemma, and they had one daughter, Princess Rhaenyra. This is where the 'Conqueror' bit of his title comes in, as the Targaryens left their seat on Dragonstone to unite the Seven Kingdoms and seize power at King's Landing.
